Tools for Recording Your Screen

There are a number of options for recording materials that you are looking to share with students online.  Based on the technology available to you, and your level of comfort with some programs, you may have multiple options that will work for your particular scenario. Below is a helpful diagram to get you started, as well as instructions for each option. Editing these videos is an advanced topic. If you wish to edit your captures, we recommend scheduling a consultation.

Just Webcam:

Windows Users:

  1. Go to the search bar and type Camera App
  2. Select the desired camera that you wish to use
  3. Select the video camera icon to activate the recorder

Mac Users:

  1. Open Quicktime
  2. Go to File > New Movie Recording
  3. From the drop down menu next to the record button, select the desired camera and microphone  

Just Computer Screen:

Windows Users:

  1. Close all unnecessary applications; open the desired file(s)
  2. Go to
  3. Select Start Recording for Free
  4. Choose Launch Recorder
  5. When finished, find the MP4 file under Documents > Screencastomatic

Mac Users:

  1. Close all unnecessary applications; open the desired file(s)
  2. Open Quicktime
  3. Go to File > New Movie Recording
  4. When finished, choose where to save the recording on your computer

Webcam and Computer Screen:


  1. Close all unnecessary applications; open the desired file(s)
  2. Login to  If needed, go to Settings > Advanced Settings > In Meeting (Basic) > toggle off Always show meeting control toolbar
  3. Start a new meeting
  4. Share the screen 
  5. Select Record
  6. Choose Record on this computer
  7. When finished, find the MP4 under Documents > Zoom

iPad/iPhone Recording:

Enable Screen Recording:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Choose Control Center
  3. Select Customize Controls
  4. Press the green plus to add Screen Recording option

To Record:

  1. Open desired screen
  2. Pull down menu from top right corner or up from bottom to show Control Center
  3. Push the icon to start screen recording (press and hold to activate the microphone)
  4. When finished, locate the video in the Photos app
