Access to HWS Network and Services

All HWS employees are issued credentials to access the Colleges' network, technology infrastructure, or electric resources as defined in the Acceptable Use Policy. To change or reset a password if you forgot it go to https://myaccount.hws.edu.

Create a Survey

IT Services provides a web-based survey tool that may be used by students, faculty and staff at the Colleges. This tool may be used for both simple and complex surveys, and offers an easy-to-use interface, various question types and options, user-friendly survey URLs, and mass e-mail and reporting capabilities.

E-mail Client Access

HWS e-mail may be accessed at https://webmail.hws.edu in most Web browsers on any Internet connection. This is the method that IT Services recommends for most users, especially students.

HWS e-mail may also be accessed from an e-mail client such as Outlook, Entourage, or Mail or from many mobile devices such as Androids and iPhones.

E-mail Storage

Students, faculty, and staff are allotted 20 GB of e-mail storage space. If that space is exceeded, the user will be unable to send or receive messages, while the mailbox will remain open. Users are encouraged to check their mail storage periodically to avoid mail delivery problems.

File Storage

HWS provides multiple ways for students, faculty, and staff to store and collaborate on files.
Box: A secure, self-managed, collaborative space for sharing files, communicating on discussion boards, and to jointly view and edit documents
Network Space: space on the network for files that need to be secure, accessible to multiple people, and backed up regularly

HWS Distribution List or LISTSERV

E-mail is a tool that all members of the community use on a daily basis in carrying out their teaching, research, and operational activities. The HWS distribution lists and LISTSERVs were created to provide faculty and staff with more options, consistency, and clarity in communication to specific groups.

The e-mail distribution lists and LISTSERV e-mail-based discussion lists are a means to separate communication channels for announcements from electronic spaces for discussion.

Junk E-mail Prevention

Students, faculty, and staff can manage junk e-mail filtering by logging in to http://antispam.hws.edu with HWS username and password.

Network Access (wired)

To access the Internet on campus, computers can connect to a network port with a network (Ethernet) cable.

Network Access (wireless)

Two wireless networks are available: a public network, for guests and certain devices (gaming consoles, smart TVs, other smart devices), and a private network for those with HWS network accounts (students, faculty, staff). Basic instructions for connecting various devices to the wireless networks are available.

Online Learning Management System

Canvas is a web-based learning management system that may be used by students, faculty and staff at the Colleges to facilitate file sharing, digital assignment distribution and submission, asynchronous communication, collaborative writing and additional features and functionalities.

Remote Access to HWS Network

The HWS network can be accessed from off-campus by the Virtual Private Network (VPN). The connection supports mainly access to the HWS network drives.

Secure/Large File Transfer

Students, faculty, and staff can use the HWS Large File Transfer system to send documents and files that are too large for normal e-mail attachments. This system allows sending files up to 2GB by e-mailing a link to a secure download Web site that the recipient can click to access.

Student Printing

Before each semester begins, every student receives $15 worth of print credits added to their print quota. Annually, on August 1, accounts reset to $15 worth of credit. On January 1, an additional credit of $15 will be added to the print quota for use in the spring semester. Credits roll over only from fall to spring semesters, but not from spring to fall.

Telephone Service

Students: Each residence hall room has been supplied with a phone jack and assigned a campus extension (the last four digits of the telephone number).

Faculty and staff: Phones are supplied for faculty and staff offices by IT Services.

TV Streaming

SpectrumU lets you watch live TV anytime, anywhere on campus using your phone, tablet, laptop, desktop or Roku device. The SpectrumU app is available for free and can be downloaded from the Roku channel store, Android, Amazon, and Apple app stores. Connect to HWS WiFi or on-campus Ethernet network and start enjoying your TV streaming service! Some devices may not be able to connect to HWS-Private; those devices will have access on HWS-Public.

User Account Login ID

Each HWS network user has a user account login ID.

Web Videoconferencing

IT Services provides a Web-based video conferencing tool to allow faculty and staff to conduct meetings online.

Web-based Video Tutorials

IT Services subscribes to Atomic Learning (Infobase), a Web-based library of video tutorials on software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.), Adobe Creative Suite (including Photoshop and InDesign), iMovie and more.
