Cable TV

Live, all-digital, high-definition cable television is provided by the Colleges free of charge, inclusive of HBO and Showtime, to all on-campus students. In addition, the Colleges also offer a live streaming app, SpectrumU. This app is available for Apple, Fire, and Android devices to stream live television programming. Download the SpectrumU app from the Android, Amazon, and Apple app stores, connect to the HWS Private Wi-Fi network, and start enjoying your streaming service!

Conference Speaker Phone

IT Services has several options for lending conference phones for teleconferences and meetings.

Create a Survey

IT Services provides a web-based survey tool that may be used by students, faculty and staff at the Colleges. This tool may be used for both simple and complex surveys, and offers an easy-to-use interface, various question types and options, user-friendly survey URLs, and mass e-mail and reporting capabilities.

Curricular Technology Integration

The Digital Learning Team can be a collaborative resource to assist faculty with leveraging technology to enhance their face to face classroom as well as the incorporation of technology-based projects in the curriculum.

Custom E-mail Listserv

E-mail listserv lists are a mechanism to distribute information amongst a group of users via e-mail. Lists are highly configurable by the requester, who takes on the role of “List Manager”. Unlike some other e-mail distribution options, recipients of the list may be users within the HWS community (i.e. user@hws.edu) or generic Internet users (i.e. user@gmail.com).

Data Restoration

Students, faculty and staff are offered storage space on the HWS network for files that need to be secure, accessible to multiple people, and backed up regularly.

Eduroam Wireless Service

The ability to connect to the Internet at other higher education institutions.

E-mail Client Access

HWS e-mail may be accessed at https://webmail.hws.edu in most Web browsers on any Internet connection. This is the method that IT Services recommends for most users, especially students.

HWS e-mail may also be accessed from an e-mail client such as Outlook, Entourage, or Mail or from many mobile devices such as Androids and iPhones.

E-mail Storage

Students, faculty, and staff are allotted 20 GB of e-mail storage space. If that space is exceeded, the user will be unable to send or receive messages, while the mailbox will remain open. Users are encouraged to check their mail storage periodically to avoid mail delivery problems.

Emergency Notification

The Colleges uses the Alertus system to disseminate emergency notifications. To receive these notifications on your computer, you must install the Alertus software.

Ensemble Account Creation

Licensed account access to Ensemble's video streaming and hosting platform as well as Ensemble Anthem recording software.

Enterprise Information System Support

Enterprise Systems (PeopleSoft applications) support requests.

Equipment Loan

IT Services offers equipment to students, faculty, and staff for curricular use.

HWS provides multiple ways for students, faculty, and staff to store and collaborate on files.
Box: A secure, self-managed, collaborative space for sharing files, communicating on discussion boards, and to jointly view and edit documents
Network Space: space on the network for files that need to be secure, accessible to multiple people, and backed up regularly

Group Membership

A group is used to share access to secure network resources such as folders/files, public mail folders/calendars, or applications.

HWS Distribution List or LISTSERV

E-mail is a tool that all members of the community use on a daily basis in carrying out their teaching, research, and operational activities. The HWS distribution lists and LISTSERVs were created to provide faculty and staff with more options, consistency, and clarity in communication to specific groups.

The e-mail distribution lists and LISTSERV e-mail-based discussion lists are a means to separate communication channels for announcements from electronic spaces for discussion.

Individualized Software Instruction

IT Services provides individualized software instruction and training to faculty, students, and staff. Curricular projects are given priority for resources.

Junk E-mail Prevention

Students, faculty, and staff can manage junk e-mail filtering by logging in to http://antispam.hws.edu with HWS username and password.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for HWS services and applications.

Network Access (wired)

To access the Internet on campus, computers can connect to a network port with a network (Ethernet) cable.

Network Access (wireless)

Two wireless networks are available: a public network, for guests and certain devices (gaming consoles, smart TVs, other smart devices), and a private network for those with HWS network accounts (students, faculty, staff). Basic instructions for connecting various devices to the wireless networks are available.

Non-HWS Access to Course Technology

For students from other colleges that are taking classes with HWS professors and need access to Canvas or ArcGIS.

Online Learning Management System

Canvas is a web-based learning management system that may be used by students, faculty and staff at the Colleges to facilitate file sharing, digital assignment distribution and submission, asynchronous communication, collaborative writing and additional features and functionalities.

Package Services (UPS, FedEx, DHL and Airborne Mail Handling)

The UPS receiving office ships, receives and distributes UPS, FedEx, DHL and Airborne packages for all students, faculty, staff and administration.

Public Desktop Computers

Public desktop computers are available throughout campus for all students, faculty, and staff to use. these computers have specialized software installed to support teaching and learning.

Record an Event

CES offers live and studio audio and video recording. Events may be supported either by a technician recording the event or by providing training and access to the equipment for the requester to record.

Remote Access to HWS Network

The HWS network can be accessed from off-campus by the Virtual Private Network (VPN). The connection supports mainly access to the HWS network drives.

Remote Access to Public Desktop Campus Computers

To ensure both faculty and students have flexible and reliable access to the wide variety of software tools the Colleges supports in campus computing labs, IT Services has invested in a tool that allows for managed access to public desktop computers. Students (using their own devices) that need specialized software installed to campus computers (all computer labs -both Mac and PC), during class or other designated work times, will be able to gain access to complete their assigned work.

Screen and Lecture Capture Consultation

Dedicated help with getting started and using multiple tools to capture your screen or webcam lectures.

Secure/Large File Transfer

Students, faculty, and staff can use the HWS Large File Transfer system to send documents and files that are too large for normal e-mail attachments. This system allows sending files up to 2GB by e-mailing a link to a secure download Web site that the recipient can click to access.

Show a Film

Classroom and Event Support staff will support equipment set up and servicing, but they are not responsible for picking up media from the library and/or facilitating media showings in a class.

Software Install

Institution-licensed software may be installed on institutional computers free of charge by contacting IT Services. Some software is also available for purchase at or through the Help Desk.

Spatial Analysis Tools/ArcGIS

The ESRI software tool platform, ArcGIS, is a commercial GIS software tool that is widely used to display and examine spatial data. In addition to ESRI desktop tools, users can also share created data on the Internet using ArcServer and ArcGIS Online for Organizations software.

Spatial Analysis/Data Collection (GPS)

Hobart and William Smith Colleges has for loan a set of GPS units that can be used to collect point data in the field.

Speakerphone or Conference Phone Not Working

Student Printing

Before each semester begins, every student receives $15 worth of print credits added to their print quota. Annually, on August 1, accounts reset to $15 worth of credit. On January 1, an additional credit of $15 will be added to the print quota for use in the spring semester. Credits roll over only from fall to spring semesters, but not from spring to fall.

Technology-Enhanced Classrooms

IT Services provides training for the use of the computing and audiovisual technology found in many of our technology-enhanced classrooms.

Telephone Service

Students: Each residence hall room has been supplied with a phone jack and assigned a campus extension (the last four digits of the telephone number).

Faculty and staff: Phones are supplied for faculty and staff offices by IT Services.

Troubleshooting Access to Software

Troubleshoot access to the Adobe creative cloud, remote access to public desktop computers, public desktop computers, access to Microsoft Office, etc.

TV Streaming

SpectrumU lets you watch live TV anytime, anywhere on campus using your phone, tablet, laptop, desktop or Roku device. The SpectrumU app is available for free and can be downloaded from the Roku channel store, Android, Amazon, and Apple app stores. Connect to HWS WiFi or on-campus Ethernet network and start enjoying your TV streaming service! Some devices may not be able to connect to HWS-Private; those devices will have access on HWS-Public.

Each HWS network user has a user account login ID.

Voice Mail to E-mail

IT Services enabled the capability of converting voice messages left on the Colleges’ phone system to media files that are sent to your e-mail account. You can play these media files on devices such as computers, smartphones, and tablets. In addition, this capability gives you the opportunity to easily forward a voice mail to a coworker for collaboration or follow-up.

Voicemail Service

Students may subscribe to voicemail service for their campus extension.

Voicemail service is supplied for faculty and staff offices by IT Services.

Web Site Space

Space on Colleges' Web servers is available to HWS community members for academic purposes. Editing access may be granted to one or more people. Web sites are created under http://people.hws.edu/web_site_name.

Web Videoconferencing

IT Services provides a Web-based video conferencing tool to allow faculty and staff to conduct meetings online.

Web-based Video Tutorials

IT Services subscribes to Atomic Learning (Infobase), a Web-based library of video tutorials on software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.), Adobe Creative Suite (including Photoshop and InDesign), iMovie and more.
