Before You Start
Operating system updates are important to optimize performance and protect against security risks. Updates address bugs, issues, and potential vulnerabilities. Not performing updates may impact the stability of your Mac.
Note: Before installing major upgrades, back up your Mac using Time Machine or another backup method.
Update macOS [Ventura and Later]
These instructions apply to macOS 13 Ventura, macOS 14 Sonoma, macOS 15 Sequoia, and macOS 26 Tahoe.
- In the upper left, click the Apple Menu .
- Click System Settings.
- In the sidebar, click General.
- On the right, click Software Update.
- If updates are available, click Update Now or Upgrade Now.
- Enter your password if prompted, and allow your Mac to restart.
Enable Automatic Updates
- In Software Update, click the info icon (ⓘ) next to Automatic Updates.
- Toggle on the options you prefer:
- Check for updates
- Download new updates when available
- Install macOS updates
- Install application updates from the App Store
- Install Security Responses and system files
- Click Done.
Update macOS [Monterey and Earlier]
These instructions apply to macOS 10.12 Sierra through macOS 12 Monterey.
- In the upper left, click the Apple Menu .
- In the drop down menu, click System Preferences.
- In the System Preferences window, click Software Update.
- The Software Update window will open.
- At the bottom of the window, check Automatically keep my Mac up to date.
- For OS upgrades, click Upgrade Now.
- For security and app updates, click More info.
- In the Update window, check the boxes next to each update you want to install.
- Click Install Now.
Update macOS [El Capitan and Earlier]
These instructions apply to macOS 10.11 El Capitan and earlier.
- In the upper left, click the Apple Menu .
- In the drop down menu, click App Store or Software Updates.
- In the App Store window, next to the OS update, click Update.
