Adding Teaching Assistants and Other Student Collaborators to Canvas

Tags canvas-ta

Student Teaching Assistants (TAs) and other student collaborators can be added to a Canvas course in one of two ways, depending on the student's role. This article explains which method applies and how to request access.

Choosing the Right Method

The method depends on whether the student is receiving credit for the role:

Student Role Method Access
Teaching Assistant – For Credit The student registers for a TA course with the Registrar. Their Canvas enrollment is then updated automatically from the PeopleSoft registration. Students who receive credit for their TA role are enrolled through registration, so no request is needed.
  1. The student registers for the TA course with the Registrar.
  2. Once registration is complete, the student's Canvas enrollment is updated automatically from the PeopleSoft registration.
Teaching Assistant – Paid, and all other roles The Digital Learning Team adds the student to the course with the Course Designer role. This applies to paid TAs and to students collaborating as a writing fellow, teaching fellow, teaching colleague, or any other designated role. Paid TAs and students in other collaborator roles are added by the Digital Learning Team as Course Designers. To request this:
  1. Open the Canvas Help request form
  2. Enter Request to add student collaborator as the ticket subject
  3. In the applicable fields, include the following:
    • Course name
    • Course number
    • Course section (if applicable)
    • Faculty name
    • Student name
    • Student username

Note: Neither the Canvas TA role nor the Course Designer role has access to Canvas grades or grading. As a result, neither role can edit Canvas assignments or quizzes.
