Troubleshooting Weak or Missing Wireless Signal

Tags Wifi

Before You Start

Wireless signal strength can vary based on your location and nearby electronics. Try the steps below before contacting the Help Desk.

Quick Fixes

  1. Restart your device – Turn it off and back on.
  2. Move closer to a hallway or door – Access points are usually in hallways, not inside rooms.
  3. Forget and reconnect to the network – Remove the saved network from your device, then reconnect.
  4. Try a different spot – Signal strength can vary even within the same room.

Check for Interference

These can weaken your signal:

  • Microwave ovens (while running)
  • Cordless phones
  • Personal hotspots or routers

Move away from these devices if possible.

Check Your Device

  • Wi-Fi switch – Some laptops have a physical switch or button to turn Wi-Fi on or off. Make sure it's on.
  • Airplane mode – Make sure it's turned off.

Still Having Trouble?

Contact the Help Desk if:

  • You've tried the steps above and still have issues
  • The problem happens on multiple devices in the same spot
  • The signal is only weak at certain times of day
