A Canvas API access token is a credential that allows you or an approved application to interact with Canvas data through the Canvas API.
Sharing your API access token carries meaningful risks. From an intellectual property standpoint, any content stored or accessible in Canvas — including student work, instructor-created materials, and course resources — could be accessed and used without the permission of its owners. Allowing a third party access to your token could also expose sensitive data, such as course enrollment, grades, discussion posts, and student submissions, with instructors and TAs facing an even greater risk given their broader access to student records.
All non-administrators for Canvas are restricted from generating a Canvas API token.
Faculty, students, and staff may request a Canvas API token. Student requests for access tokens require the sponsorship of a faculty member who understands the student's intended use of the Canvas API.
Requests may be made by clicking Request Add-On and filling out the form on the Adding Third-Party Applications to HWS Systems service page.
Note: Token requests are reviewed by a Canvas administrator. Please allow up to five (5) business days for processing. You will be notified once your token is approved and ready.
All uses of Canvas API tokens must comply with the HWS Responsible and Acceptable Use of Electronic Resources policy.
