How to "Junk" or "Un-Junk" an E-mail in Outlook Client/365

To "Junk" an E-mail:

To "Junk" an e-mail in the Outlook Client or 365, you have several ways to mark it as "junk" or "spam". This action removes the e-mail from your Inbox folder and, in some cases, adds the sender to your UnSafe Senders list.

Navigate to the e-mail you have identified as junk and choose one of the following options:

  • Report Junk: Highlight the e-mail, then on the Home Ribbon, choose Report > Report Junk.  This will move the e-mail into your Junk Folder.

  • Drag/Drop: Select the e-mail, and drag/drop it into the Junk Email folder.
  • Right Click: Right click the e-mail, then choose Report > Report Junk.  This will move the e-mail into your Junk Folder.

To "UnJunk" an E-mail:

To "Unjunk" an e-mail in Outlook 365, you need to mark it as "Not Junk" or "Not Spam". This action removes the e-mail from your Junk Email folder and, in some cases, adds the sender to your Safe Senders list.  By marking an e-mail as "Not Junk", you're training Outlook to recognize that sender as legitimate, and future e-mails from that address should arrive in your Inbox.

  • Navigate to the Junk E-mail folder listed in your e-mail folder list in the left column, locate the e-mail that was incorrectly classified as junk and click the button It's not junk.
  • Outlook on the web: Select the e-mail, then click the [...] (More actions) menu, and choose Mark as not junk or Not junk

  • Outlook desktop client: Select the e-mail, then on the Home ribbon click the Junk button and choose Not Junk

  • Alternatively, right-click the e-mail and select "Mark as not junk" or "Not Junk" .

(Optional) Add the sender to your Safe Senders list: This ensures future e-mails from that sender bypass the junk filter.

  • Outlook on the web: Go to Settings > Mail > Junk e-mail and manage your Safe Senders list.

  • Outlook desktop client: Go to Home > Junk > Junk E-mail Options and manage the Safe Senders list.
