Bulletins and Maintenance

IT Services is dedicated to providing a high level of system up-time throughout the academic year. In order to achieve this service level, we perform periodic maintenance activities on core equipment comprised of network switches, servers, telecommunications equipment, and wireless access points. To minimize disruption to the Colleges' business, we make every attempt to perform these activities during non-business hours, wherever possible.

This page is a resource for bulletins and general maintenance plans.

Reminder: Planned Maintenance: Operating System & ESET Updates

Date: May 1, 2021

Sending as a reminder of tonight's planned maintenance of operating system and ESET updates. This maintenance will only affect HWS owned systems and is set to begin at 1am this evening. See below for additional information regarding this maintenance.

Computer security and operating system updates are vitally important to complete both to optimize performance as well as to protect against potential security risks. Other updates address newly identified bugs and issues, even though they may not be responsible for security vulnerabilities, they might impact the stability of your Operating System.

Keeping our systems and your data secure is our top priority, so at 1 a.m., Sunday May 2, we will push the latest updates and security patches to your computer which, when complete, will cause your system to reboot. For this work to be successful we ask that you please leave your computer running, but locked, either when you leave the office on Friday, April 30, or Saturday night at your residence.

If we are unable to communicate with your computer during this maintenance window, these updates will complete the first time you power on your computer after May 2 at 1 a.m., forcing a reboot when complete.

Security Alert – Malicious Emails

Date: April 28, 2021

We have detected malicious emails coming into HWS, with some containing malware. Malware is software designed to cause damage to a personal device, server, or network. In an email, the malware is usually delivered as an attachment or link. Once the user opens the attachment or clicks on the link, the malware is released and can cause significant disruption on a wide scale.

Please remain vigilant by:

  • being on the lookout for phishing schemes
  • not clicking on links or opening attachments in emails from unknown senders
  • ignoring and deleting unsolicited requests for personal information
  • applying the latest security updates to your devices and apps
  • ensuring that your anti-virus is running and is up to date
  • forwarding spam emails to igotspam@hws.edu
  • notifying the Help Desk if you ever question the authenticity of an email
