Social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, etc. can be tremendous tools but can also pose significant risks to individuals and organizations so it is important to understand how to use them safely. Here are some things to keep in mind when using social networks:
- Only friend or follow people you know
- Create a unique password and never use the same password on sites you use for financial transactions or any other vital functions
- Change your password at least once a year
- Only install apps from trusted sources
- Regularly review what apps you have added to your account and remove those you no longer use
- NEVER paste script code into your browser address bar!
- Always log out of your social networks, especially when accessing them from any computer other than your own
- Keep your browser and add-ons like Adobe Flash up to date
- If you suspect your account has been compromised change your password immediately
