Customizing the Left Hand Navigation Bar in your Canvas Site

Canvas comes with a whole toolkit of items that you may or may not use in your course. These items are listed in a column on the left side of the course window. The left-hand navigation links can be re-organized or hidden from students to help better facilitate delivery of course content. Removing unused links from the navigation will result in a visually cleaner site and prevent students from unnecessarily getting lost in links that have no content. Please note that links cannot be renamed.

Changing the navigation menu

  1. Go to your course on Canvas.
  2. On the left, click Settings.
  3. At the top of the screen, click the Navigation tab.
  4. Drag any navigation links you do not want to use down to the bottom of the page.
  5. Drag and drop navigation links to rearrange them in the order you prefer.
  6. When finished, click Save

More information on changing the navigation menu can be found in the Canvas Help Guide.
